River trade, especially trade in cereals, for centuries played an important role in the life of Bydgoszcz. The historic warehouses for grain storage that were adopted for the city logo still accentuate its industrial infrastructure. Although there used to be more of them, today the remaining buildings grace the banks of the River Brda and Mill Island. Since 1964, the District Museum has been situated at ul. Water and fire
Water is the element that gave life to our city, but once it was defeated. In the late evening of February 6, 1960, the fire is spreading slowly along the banks of the River Brda in the heart of Bydgoszcz. Icy river is only a silent witness to the incident. Bydgoszcz granaries are burning. Restless wind moves the fire from building to building. Firefighters look in horror as cold cuts the water and becomes an ally to the raging fire.
What would be the symbol of the city, should all the granaries on the Brda preserved? We do not know. They remained in the memory of Bydgoszcz residents, hid in the old albums. Three granaries for which the time was more gracious, have become the official logo of the city. River trade, especially trade in grain, for centuries played an important role in the life of Bydgoszcz. Nevertheless, it was the emotions that influenced the choice of the logo motif. Although granaries were built in the last decade of the 18th c., we can not imagine the city without them. Maybe it's because they accentuate the relationship with the river and the Lemara barge moored on the Bydgoszcz waterfront draws attention to the prosperous, entrepreneurial, multicultural side of Bydgoszcz rich in the work of craft. To the tolerant side of the city, because here what you can do mattered, not who you were born and where you came from. It envisioned the city of the bright and promising future.
